Emil Nolde (1867–1956) was a German-Danish painter and printmaker, renowned for his bold use of color and his association with the German Expressionist movement. He was a key member of the Die Brücke (The Bridge) group, one of the pioneering movements in Expressionism, though he later distanced himself from the group to pursue his own path. Nolde was a supporter of Nazi ideology and hoped that the regime would embrace his art. However, ironically, his works were condemned by the Nazis as “degenerate art,” and many of his paintings were confiscated or banned from exhibitions. Despite this, Nolde’s private political beliefs remain a controversial aspect of his legacy.
